1. The Roman Empire - Overview
The Roman Empire lasted almost one thousand years, not as an empire but as a republic that would develop into a large empire under many different emperors. The Roman Empire began through expansion and conquest of neighboring lands that would ultimately serve as provider of resources for Rome. Egypt is a classic example as it provided essential grain resources to Rome. Rome developed the system of colonies but ensured that loyal officers would be established in these colonies, officers that would have the trust and respect of local people. Rome developed important infrastructure in the form of roads and aqueducts that provided important services but also allowed the Roman army to be deployed anywhere quickly. Rome established citizenship that is still with us today as an important legacy.
