Global political re-alignment followed World War II
In World War II, the western world united in its struggle against fascism in central Europe and even made an alliance with the ideological enemy, the Soviet Union as the lesser of the two evils.
Once Nazi Germany had been defeated, the Soviet Union remained, scathed, but ready to rebuild her industry to the point of challenging the emerging super power of the United States. The result was a realignment of the world into two cold war camps.
Assignment:
1. Describe the world after World War II, how NATO and the Warsaw Pact countries emerged and what their purpose was in the Cold War.
2. Describe the arms race and how it escalated over time. Make particular reference to some of the serious cold world hot spots, both in terms of military escalation and break-out of actual warfare.
