Renaissance, Reformation and Exploration
Renaissance, or rebirth, refers to the time period after the Medieval Time Period. The Black Death, pestilence and bubonic plague, carried by fleas hosted by rats infested by the disease and transported by trading vessels from the middle east to Europe, had caused havoc by eliminating millions of people thus destroying the very base of the feudalistic structure of Europe. Unable to continue feudal control over serfs, a money economy was introduced that led to the idea of enjoyment of life on earth rather than the after life as proclaimed by the Catholic Church. Corruption in the church would lead to demands for reform and split the church into different beliefs, thus setting the scene for exploration and trade.
This unit examines the changes that occurred in Europe as a result of the bubonic plague and its consequent changes in the power of the church, transfer of power to nation states and exploration and rise of nationalism.
