- Draw a neatly labeled map on which you show the Oregon Boundary Dispute. Show the areas under dispute and explain the claims of each party. Provide details about the solutions. [10 marks]
- Write a one-page speech in which you take sides on the Oregon Boundary dispute. Defend your position either from the point of view of an expansionist, ready to go to war against British North America, or from the point of view of a British representative, solidifying your claim to this territory. Make sure your speech contains factual references. Quote these and cite their sources. [10 marks] Practice your speech in small groups of four or five. Select the best speech from each group. The winner will read his or her speech to the class.
- Draw a map showing Vancouver Island and the mainland colonies. Show the location of the gold rush and explain how gold miners would arrive in British Columbia. Describe how miners from different locations would compete for gold. [10 marks]
- Barkerville Days. Pretend you are a gold miner or an inn keeper in the town of Barkerville. You can also be a Chinese labourer trying to find gold and strike it lucky by finding the gold mountain. Describe your experiences in diary form. You must have at least three diary entries. These should be illustrated. If you wish, it can be in the form of a cartoon. Present your diaries to the class. [10 marks]

- The government of British Columbia experienced the same predicaments as did Upper and Lower Canada: the province was ruled by an elite group of families that sought strict control over the province colonies and were reluctant to advance responsible government. Explain how responsible government was accomplished in British Columbia? [10 marks]
- The two colonies, Vancouver Island and the mainland, were amalgamated by order of the British government. When did this take place and why? [10 marks]
- Who was Amor de Cosmos? What was his position with regards to Confederation? Why were there trends amongst some circles in British Columbia to secede from Canada? What do you think would British Columbia be like today if this had happened? [10 marks] http://www.fraserjourney.ca/
