Focus on the following guiding questions.
What does the resource show in general?
In detail?
Is the resource a painting, a sketch?
Who would have likely made this painting or sketch? For what purpose?
Who would likely have been the audience of this person?
Is the painting or sketch a commentary on a social condition at the time? Would you say it is a positive or a negative comment? How would you know?
How do the resources help you understand what society was like in this early time period of Canada?
Chapter 2 also provides an overview page on pp.40-41, a variety of maps as well as diagrams. How would these help you understand what it was like to live in this time period?
What kind of work would most people in Canada in the 19th century have been involved in? Are your thoughts on this question in any way reflected in some of the images shown in this chapter? Explain.
Choose a minimum of three resources from Chapter 2 and develop a story seen through the eyes of a contemporary living at that time to describe what life was like in 19th century Canada.
