Law 12 Course Outline
Unit 1 focuses on Civil and Legal Rights, Law and Society, and the Classification of Law. [September]
Unit 2 looks at how laws are made, the constitution, statute law and common law, as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Human Rights [October]
Unit 3 looks at Criminal Law, the Criminal Court System, Investigations and Arrest, Criminal Offenses, Defenses, Sentencing and Criminal Law for Young people.[November to January]
Unit 4 examines Tort law, both unintentional and intentional.[February to mid-March]
Unit 5 looks at Contract Law and [April]
Unit 6 examines key elements of Family Law.[May]

Law 12 Course Work
This is a course that requires reading. Be sure to come to class prepared with notes from your readings so that you can participate productively. Class notes and reading notes form an integral part of your learning experience and mark.
10% late marks every class an assignment is late.
Term 1: Topics: Civil Rights, History of Law, Law and Justice, Human Rights, Charter of Rights and Freedoms
1. Law Poster. Design a law poster that illustrates the roots of the Canadian legal system and the hierarchical structure of law in Canada. Your poster must be presented to the class in a short speech of between 3 and 5 minutes. [Use Ch. 1, 2 for guidance] 10.00%
2. Create a Constitution for a club, or an imaginary country. Group Project [Based on Ch.3] 20.00%
3. Charter Challenge. Create a charter challenge based on a statute. To be done as a tribunal. The challenger presents the case to the court; the Crown's representative presents opposing arguments; a judge delivers the verdict. Alternate: Choose a Charter Right and summarize the relevant Charter Digest. Present your summary orally. 15.00%
